About me

Bottom line, I LOVE discussing books with friends! I enjoy the art of a skilled writer (like, for example, Virginia Woolf) and I appreciate considering the worldview perspective of a writer who is also a philosopher (Dostoevsky is a good example). I am mesmerized by the superhuman intellect of authors like Homer and James Joyce. Laughing is my favorite pastime so I can’t get enough of Jane Austen and Charles Dickens and Flannery O’Connor! Bottom line, I do love books.

Enough about my hobbies, it seems like most web sites include a bio of the creator. I guess it gives folks the warm fuzzies when pondering the question, “Does this guy have any street cred?,” so here goes. I was born in 1969 in the beautiful, if somewhat isolated, Appalachian mountains of West Virginia. I wanted to be an NFL quarterback when I was growing up, but when that dream seemed unlikely (somewhere around age 11), I focused more on academics. I graduated high school in 1987. I fell in love with the “classics” when I was in college and looked forward to finishing my required work so I could read Tom Sawyer and Camus. I graduated from Columbia International University in 1992, immediately took a teaching post at a small Christian school in VA and got married in 1993. My lovely wife Julie and I just celebrated 27 years of marriage. I have had several interesting jobs along the way, but I have always been a teacher and worked in education, in some capacity.

Along the way, I attended Reformed Theological Seminary and finished an M.A.R. (Master of Arts in Religion) in 2002. Everything changed (in a good way) when I learned about classical, Christian education in the 90’s. We ended up moving to Pennsylvania to teach at Veritas Academy in 2004. While teaching at Veritas I had the privilege of helping to start an online classical, Christian school (now Veritas Scholars Academy) and then another in 2014 (Wilson Hill Academy). I taught a full load and served in administration in those two schools. I am currently serving as Dean of Academics back at Veritas Academy and I teach several classes as well. Oh, and along the way, we adopted two children and had three biological children (here’s the whole lineup:  Isaac, Sarah, Zachary, Jack, Micah).
